Malaysian badminton legend who earlier decided to step back from the Badminton World Federation World Super Series Finals to be held in Dubai has changed his mind and will compete in the tournament going to be held from 13 December to 17th.
The current world no.6 had a poor run of form this year, in which he only managed to win one Super Series title and a silver medal in the All England Championships he lost to, many big players and shockingly to new players after which speculations started to toil on his career. So, he decided to skip this event but, after winning the Hong Kong Open Super Series title on Sunday which was on 26th November, Lee had a positive heart change and has decided to take part in the upcoming event.
Lee’s stand on his sudden participation in the tournament
Lee gave a statement on his sudden participation “I have to play in the final Super Series competition which will feature only the top-eight players in the world. It is not easy to play in the World Super Series Finals because only the top eight ranked players are eligible to play”.
He further added to it as “However, after competing in Dubai, I will take a break to spend some time with my family before preparing for the All England in March next year”.
He said his coaches Bock and Hendrawan would plan and decide the other major tournaments that he would be participating next year, which includes the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Asian games, World Championships in China and the last Thomas cup.
Comeback in form by Chong Wei
Lee beat his arch-rival and inescapable enemy Chen Long of China by 21-14, 21-19 in straight sets to claim his fifth Hong Kong Open title.
After his win, he quoted that “I am happy to have regained my confidence after going through a lean spell for about eight months. This positive win will be a boost for me” he added.
So, it will be interesting to see how Lee will take this momentum in the Super Series Finals and in the upcoming season. Let’s wait and watch…
