David Goffin shocks Federer in ATP World tour Finals!

Yesterday’s night was a night to remember or it would be better to say this tournament has absolutely been a dream tour for the Belgian player David Goffin. He started the tournament in the form of an ‘underdog’, but as it is often said that even an underdog should not be underestimated because when it hunts, it hunts in a flock. Same goes very true for David Goffin as he was not given much hype or attention by the media.

Currently ranked as world no. 8 Goffin started as a rookie in the tournament not being considered as one of the favorites in the event because of the presence of all-time greats and the inform Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. After ending this year as world no.1 and 2 respectively. Nadal and Federer were meant to win this coveted title as termed by the international media. But, as it is said twists and turns are part of the game. Same happened in the ATP World Tour Finals when David Goffin was the man who defeated Roger Federer in the semifinals by 2-6, 6-3, and 6-4. He did not do this upset but he also defeated Rafael Nadal a few days back in the same tournament. Federer who was undefeated against Goffin in the previous six meetings lost in a pretty competitive match to which Federer responded as poor serving in the second game led the match to slip away from his hands.

Reaction by Goffin on his latest wins against the two legends

Before reaching the tournament his statistics against Federer were 0-6, which includes a 6-1, 6-2 loss in the semifinals of Swiss Indoors Basel last month. So it was difficult for Goffin to change things around but he didn’t lose his hope. Before the match, he even said: “Honestly, I don’t know what to do tomorrow”. Goffin who qualified for the finals for the first time will now play for the biggest title of his career on Sunday.

After the match, he said “For the first time I played my best tennis, and I played a little bit more relaxed after the first set. I started to feel the ball really well for the first time, and continued to serve and played my best tennis today”. He became the first player since 2015 to defeat both Federer and Nadal in the same tournament after Novak Djokovic did it in that year.

The Final Showdown

Goffin will now meet his old rival Grigor Dimitrov who defeated Jack Sock in another Semifinal. His record against Dimitrov is 1-4 but he hopes to produce another superb game of his to overcome his rival to win the prestigious title.
